Last summer’s Jason Bourne may be 2016’s biggest movie we've all already forgotten about. The franchise's revival put Matt Damon back in the driver’s seat after trying a legacyquel with Jeremy Renner, and the crowd responded in kind with a princely $164 million box-office take in the U.S. alone. But even as the Jason Bourne formula continues to yield fiscal gains for all parties involved, Matt Damon appears to have grown unsure about the franchise’s continued viability. In a new interview with the Toronto Sun, he expressed his doubts about the future of the secret agent that made him a bona fide movie star.

The Sun quotes Damon as saying, “It would have to be a pretty incredible story to get us all back on the horse. [...] This last one didn’t do as well as the one we did 10 years ago, so maybe people are done with the character.” While it is true that Jason Bourne did not reap the massive grosses that The Bourne Ultimatum did back in 2007 ($227 million domestic), Damon also can’t entirely discount the possibility that the franchise will get back on its feet, either. Pressed on the subject, Damon added, “Look, we all love working together and those movies are a lot of fun to make, so we sure would be happy to do it. If we can figure out a good story.”

His statement essentially boils down to “I’d do it if it was good, but I don’t really see it being good, so who knows?” It's a pretty standard, safe stance to take on the matter, one that distances him from a flagging franchise but leaves the door open in the event that it becomes worth revisiting. Jason Bourne’s always fought to clear up his cloudy past, but now, it’s his future that’s looking uncertain.
