Meek Mill is free and hip-hop is just that much better for it. In his ongoing run of performances since coming home from prison, Meek makes a stop at tonight's 2018 BET Awards with a new song in tow.

Bought to the stage by a contingent of Philly superstars like Questlove, Kevin Hart, Lil Uzi Vert and Black Thought, Meek came out and shut it down with a performance of "Stay Woke," a true-to-its-title song about the gun violence, the criminal justice system and the plight of black people living in the ghetto.

Meek's set begins on a set built to resemble his neighborhood in Philadelphia. During the performance, the police rush the stage, and beat and arrest a crew of guys. A young girl is depicted as an innocent bystander hit by a stray bullet during the scrum. When her mother sobs over her body, a cop comes by and tosses an American flag over the body. The stage then turns into a jail, complete with prisoners. Miguel has hook duty, and slowly emerges from the back of the stage during the performance.

Other than addressing the criminal justice system, Meek had another message in mind. He saluted rappers XXXTentacion and Jimmy Wopo by wearing a hoodie featuring illustrations of both artists, who were slain in separate incidents on Monday (June 18).

Seeing as the song is brand new, there's no telling what project—if any—the track will land on.

Outside of the music, Meek Mill has been pushing hard for prison reform. He appeared on MSNBC to fight for the rights of the incarcerated this month. Soon after, he took part in a prison reform rally in his hometown.
