According to The Hollywood Reporter, the rumors are true: the next film in the Cloverfield saga is rampaging its way to Netflix.

THR says Netflix is “in talks” to acquire God Particle, the third Cloverfield movie, which has already been delayed from its first release date. Their report says that Paramount CEO Jim Gianopulos is behind the decision, which was based on the state of the studio and its upcoming release calendar:

‘He sat down and looked at what is theatrical, what is not in this day and age,’ says one source. Certain movies were not making the cut.

Their sources claim the movie needs “some work, and while [producer J.J.] Abrams expressed an intent to get down to business in postproduction, it was too little, too late.” (We have heard similar unconfirmed rumors about the film, which was directed by Julius Onah and stars Daniel Bruhl, Elizabeth Debicki, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and David Oyelowo.) Paramount has already partnered with Netflix on another upcoming movie, Alex Garland’s Annihilation, which will hit the streaming service just weeks after its theatrical debut.

Paramount had planned to release God Particle (or whatever it winds up being called; one rumored title is Cloverfield Station) on April 20. Deadline says they’ve heard if Netflix finalizes this deal, it could wind up there “more quickly than that.” So a resolution to this mystery box may be coming soon.
