A ‘Riverdale’ Spinoff Is Happening + No, It Has Nothing to Do With ‘Sabrina’
The Riverdale universe is expanding — and no, it has nothing to do with a certain witchy teen.
During the Television Critics Association summer press tour on Monday (August 6), CW president Mark Pedowitz revealed Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has "something in mind" for a spinoff of the dark teen drama.
According to TV Line, Aguirre-Sacasa later confirmed the news himself, telling reporters he and the team were "really excited," but stressing they were "still in the early stages" of the project. He said he's hoping to develop the show for the 2019-2020 TV season, but declined to share any details about which Riverdale characters might be crossing over or what the plot would entail.
“It will be very different from Riverdale,” is all Aguirre-Sacasa teased.
The news arrives just months before The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which operates in the same universe as the Archie comics Riverdale is based upon, is set to debut on Netflix. It was originally created for the CW as an offshoot of Riverdale, but has taken a different shape since landing at Netflix. Currently, Aguirre-Sacasa has said, there are no plans for any inter-network crossovers between Riverdale and Sabrina.
“Right now, we’re trying to make sure that the shows have their own identity and their own set of rules,” he explained, per TV Line.
