In a new cover story for Marie Claire U.K., Shailene Woodley opened up about her brief yet traumatizing stint spent behind bars after being arrested in 2016 for protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline.

"I was strip-searched. Like get naked, turn over, spread your butt cheeks, bend over," she revealed, adding, "They were looking for drugs in my a--."

The actress also said she felt like a "caged animal."

"When you’re in a jail cell and they shut that door, you realize no one can save you. If there’s a fire and they decide not to open the door, you’ll die," she shared.

In October 2016, Woodley was arrested for criminal trespassing and engaging in a riot while protesting against the DAPL, an experience which she likened to one of her films franchises.

"I’m like, ‘This is some Divergent s---,'" she explained of the chaos and the appearance of multiple military tanks. "The only time in my life that I saw a tank like that was on set in Atlanta."

Back in March, Woodley pleaded guilty to one count of disorderly conduct, and was sentenced to one year deferred imposition and one year of supervised probation, according to Entertainment Tonight.
