Sales Tax Holiday Saves Texans $2 Billion
Though some schools are starting early and are already back at it this week, a big holiday is coming. Texas Sales Tax Holiday aka Tax-Free Weekend begins on Friday, August 9, 2024 and continues through midnight Sunday, August 11th.
This weekend has saved Texans tons of money over time. According to Lufkin Daily News contributing writer, Trent Ashby (State Representative for District 9), the program has saved Texans almost $2 billion since it started in 1999.
The Texas Comptroller's office encourages all taxpayers to support Texas businesses, while saving money on tax-free purchases. The sales tax holiday exemption applies only to specific things. It's good to know what qualifying items have a refund available.
The Price Is The Price On Tax-Free Weekend In Texas
You can visit the Texas Comptrollers website for a full list of things that are tax-free this weekend. It's the one weekend that certain things are the price listed on the tag.
It is reassuring that everything is going to be 8.25 percent cheaper. That way things you never get a discount on are a little cheaper.

This saves you about $8 for every $100 that you spend. Most clothing items, footwear, backpacks, and school supplies sold for less than $100 will be tax-free.
Sales Tax Holiday Refund Requests
If you do end up paying sales tax on a qualified item during the sales tax holiday, you can ask the seller for a refund of the tax paid. See a list of things that will be tax-free below.
