Fallen Tree Forces Ellen Trout Zoo In Lufkin To Close

Strong thunderstorms came through Deep East Texas in waves all day on Tuesday, May 28, 2024. Small limbs and green leaves littered the streets of the area, and some residents lost power in the aftermath.

Luckily much of the damage was localized and power is being restored as quickly as possible. According to Oncor, there are currently 16,076 active outages, affecting over half a million customers in Texas.

Knowing that we are not alone with the issues the storm brought, is little consolation. One of our Lufkin institutions suffered a downed tree and was closed for the day.

Ellen Trout Zoo Closed For The Day Due To Downed Tree

If you were thinking of stopping by the zoo after the weather cleared up, that was a no-go today as the zoo had a small amount of damage from the storm.

According to a press release from the City of Lufkin Communications Director Jessica Pebsworth, the storm caused a tree to fall on a walkway, closing Ellen Trout Zoo for the rest of the day.

Due to inclement weather that has caused a tree to fall on a public path, the Ellen Trout Zoo will remain closed for the rest of the day. The Zoo will reopen tomorrow during its regular hours, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the last entry at 4:30 p.m. We hope everyone stays safe and dry.
