Disney Setting Sail With ‘Moana’ From the Directors of ‘The Little Mermaid’

Moana Disney
Walt Disney Animation

With ‘Frozen‘ still a raging phenomenon and ‘Big Hero 6‘ right around the corner, the folks at Disney Animation are probably feeling pretty good about their lives and careers at the moment. So the first news about their next film, ‘Moana,’ arrives at a time when the world’s most famous animation studio is at a fairly incredible high and like their last major blockbuster, this is a female-led adventure. Prepare for the merchandise, parents.

‘Moana’ comes from one of the most respected corners of Disney Animation, namely directors Ron Clements and John Musker. This is the duo who helped revive the company back in 1989 with ‘The Little Mermaid,’ made oodles of money with ‘Aladdin’ and fought to keep traditional animation alive with ‘The Princess and the Frog.’ Unfortunately, ‘Moana’ will be CG animated (insert sad faces here), but at least Clements and Musker are making another movie. That’s reason enough for celebration.

We don’t know much about the project yet, but we do have the first piece of concept art (which you can see above) and an official synopsis, which sounds like this:

In the ancient South Pacific world of Oceania, Moana, a born navigator, sets sail in search of a fabled island. During her incredible journey, she teams up with her hero, the legendary demi-god Maui, to traverse the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous sea creatures, breathtaking underworlds and ancient folklore.

‘Moana’ doesn’t have a release date yet, but it’s slated to arrive something in late 2016. Expect a November release, because that’s ‘Frozen’ and we all know how that went down.
