‘Pirates of the Caribbean 5′ Gets a Release Date (Sort Of)
‘Pirates of the Caribbean 5‘ is still a thing that is happening despite the disappointing domestic box office of ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ (thanks, Rest Of The World) and after years of behind the scenes turmoil, it looks like Disney has finally decided on a release date.
Or rather, a release year. It looks like the fifth adventure of Captain Jack Sparrow will hit theaters in 2017, according to Walt Disney Studios’ official Facebook announcement. It was previously announced that the newest installment would be coming to theaters on July 10, 2015, but it seems Disney has pushed that date (way) back to July 7, 2017.
And that’s it! We still have no idea exactly what this movie is about or who will be returning besides Johnny Depp. We do know that it’s supposedly titled ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,’ but that could easily change. We do know that ‘Kon-Tiki’ directors Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg are attached to direct, but they haven’t made a peep about this project in ages. We do know that the fantastic Christoph Waltz was, at one point, being courted to play the film’s villain, but who knows if that’s still happening.
Let’s be brutally honest for a second: is there anyone who really wants another one of these movies? Sure, the first one is still one of the most pleasant cinematic surprises of the 21st century, but the second and third films weren’t too hot and the fourth entry was downright bad. But Johnny Depp has been on a bit of a losing streak recently (‘The Lone Ranger‘ and ‘Transcendence‘ and ‘Dark Shadows‘), so it makes sense he’d retreat back to the character that transformed him into the world’s biggest movie star for a little while.
Anyway, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 5′ will hit in 2017 and there’s nothing you or we can personally do to stop it. C’est la vie.
