Buddy the Elf Would Go Nuts for The Big Tex Choice Awards Top Ten

Remember that scene from the movie Elf---the one where Buddy the Elf concocts a morning bowl of breakfast that even Willy Wonka would think was too sweet?  He starts with spaghetti and then adds candies, cookies, pop tarts and syrup.

That's what came to my mind when I saw the 'Deep Fried Halloween', which is one of the finalists for the 17th Annual Big Tex Choice Awards.

The Deep Fried Halloween, according to the official description, starts with a delicious large chewy pretzel that is dropped in the fryer. As it becomes golden brown, we quickly bathe it in candy corn syrup, followed by some rainbow sprinkles and powdered sugar. Now the fun begins – piping in orange and white buttercream icing, then stacking some of our most favorite Halloween candies, like M&M’s®, Reese’s® Pieces, Mini-Twix®, OREO® cookie crumbles, and candy corn just to name a few. Topped with a delicious marshmallow whip cream and a Reese’s® Peanut Butter Cup as the crown, we put the final touches of Hershey’s chocolate syrup caramel sauce and candy corn drizzle on this beautiful desert.

Going back to Buddy the Elf, it seems the only thing missing is the spaghetti. But, you know what, I would still give it a try.

The Big Tex Choice Awards is a competition leading up to the The State Fair of Texas in Dallas.  Concessionaires who will be at the fair are asked to submit an entry into the Big Tex Choice Awards.  Over the past years, fair foods have gone over the top with their uniqueness and creativity, so seventeen years ago the State Fair of Texas officials decided to make a competition out of it.

On Sunday, August 29, three winners will be crowned in the categories of: “Best Taste – Savory,” “Best Taste – Sweet,” and “Most Creative.” The competition began in early July with an impressive 43 entries represented by 26 concessionaires. Of those entries, 32 were selected as semi-finalists. Each entry was evaluated on four Fair-food elements: uniqueness, creativity, presentation, and taste. After some tasty tests and delicious dishes, votes were cast and the results are finally in! Now the top ten finalists must present themselves to a prestigious panel of celebrity judges in hopes of securing one of the top spots.

The 2021 State Fair of Texas will open on Friday, September 24, and will run through Sunday, October 17, 2021. Head to BigTex.com/Tickets to purchase season passes and premium tickets.
