  • 4 deaths were teens and children
  • Lack of seatbelts
  • Speed was a factor in most

Since this past Friday, May 19, 2023, there have been eight highway deaths in East Texas. A Lufkin teen was killed near Nacogdoches on Friday.

There was a wreck in Hopkins County the same day, involving two teens crossing lanes and hitting another driver head-on that killed the 40-year-old driver.

Three people died and three were sent to the hospital in an accident outside of Tyler on Sunday morning. That accident involved two Palestine high school students and is still under investigation.

A rollover wreck on Monday in Grand Saline, Texas killed one person and sent two to the hospital. A motorcyclist was killed on Tuesday in an accident in Tyler.

Fatal Car Crashes Create A Trend In East Texas

Thanks to all of the DPS troopers that worked this large number of crashes in our area. I know they must be spread thin investigating these accidents, while emotionally trying to deal with all these tragedies on our roads.

Being the first on the scene, it's hard to witness these repeated tragedies, especially when it involves children. Please take the time to remind your friends and family that it is a serious life-and-death struggle out there on the roads.

Laws are there to protect us and keep us as safe as possible, while hurtling down the highway at over 75 MPH in some cases. Buckle up those seatbelts and take it easy as we head onto the roads this Memorial Day weekend. Let's break the streak.
