Sadly, Five Guy Burgers and Fries has cooked their last burger in Lufkin. After almost exactly 10 years in business the location in the South Loop Crossing Shopping Center have called it quits.

The chain started in Arlington, Virginia and has recently been struggling in the Lone Star State. A few of their locations have closed their doors for good around the state amidst the pandemic.

If you love Five Guys don't worry, they are still going strong in other locations. They are actually about to branch out to Australia with franchises opening soon.

No Notice That Five Guys In Lufkin Was Closing

There had been times that the local Five Guys was closed citing labor and supply issues. I can imagine the cost of peanut oil that they fried the fries in became an issue as well.

Now there is brown paper covering all of the windows and a sign up that spells it out pretty clearly. The sign reads "This location is now Permanently Closed. Thank you Lufkin for so many great years!"

The signs are already off the building, and all of the lettering has been scraped off the doors. That could mean that another restaurant or business is thinking of moving in quickly.

An Ode To Five Guys Fries

Many local customers were not happy with the prices and made it clear. Over 250,000 ways to make your own burger came with a heavy cost.

Even with the perception of being overpriced, they stayed in town much longer than other fast-food chains. The fact that they didn't have a drive-through also hurt them.

I had eaten there many times in the past, and they did have the most amazing fries. I even figured out how to cook them similarly myself. Here is my recipe if you are in need of some great fries.

Dan Patrick's One Guy French Fry Recipe

  • 5 pounds of fresh potatoes
  • A large bottle of peanut oil
  • Gonzo's Sugar Daddy from Daddy's Seasonings
  • Salt
  • Water

Hand cut the potatoes or get a fry cutter if you are making these all the time. Put the fries in a large bowl, and cover with water. Add a tablespoon of salt and stir a bit.  Put the bowl in the fridge for up 5 hours. If you are in a hurry you can skip this step just like they do at Five Guys.

Put peanut oil in a large deep fryer or pot on the stove and heat to 375 degrees. Dry the fries and put them carefully in the peanut oil. Cook for 5-6 minutes until they become golden brown.

Take them out of the oil and place them onto a metal rack or a plate lined with paper towels and immediately sprinkle liberally with Gonzo's Sugar Daddy.  They are ready as soon as they are cool enough to eat. Don't forget the Heinz ketchup; only the best for your fries after all that hard work.

I kept them on the wire racks in the oven, while I made other batches so they would stay warm. You can also make these in the oven without frying.

They aren't the same, but still good. Hope you like them.
