Although fans were overjoyed that Lil Wayne finally dropped his long-awaited album Tha Carter V last Thursday (Sept. 27), many were left wondering why some big names were missing from the project—including YMCMB's own Drake.

Lil Wayne spoke with Elliott Wilson for his CRWN interview series last night (Oct. 3) and explained the discrepancy, citing a reason all-too familiar to many hip-hop artists.

“He has a song that didn’t get cleared,” Weezy said. “The clearances, man. The clearances, man. People be trippin' when they find out who it is and when they find out what the song’s subject is about. They don't represent the names of something like that. You really don't know why they say no.”

Wayne alluded to the fact that some artists aren't down to have their songs sampled given the nature of his interpolation of their music—dubbed "raunchy" by Wilson.

Another artist who ended up not making it on to Tha Carter V was Post Malone, who was rumored to have recorded a last-minute verse for the album. Apparently, according to co-writer of the song John Yukon, both Drake and Post Malone were supposed to be on the track "What About Me." If clearance issues stopped Drake from getting on the song, maybe that's the same reason Post wasn't on it either. Sosamann ended up being the featured artist for that track.
