Science Says Women Need More Sleep
I have often argued with my boyfriend that women do need more sleep than men. Up until now, I have had no proof as to why I feel this way. I normally have to suffer through 5 days of little to no sleep then on the weekends I sleep like it's my job. I normally hit a wall after 5 consecutive days of waking up at 4:00 a.m. Turns out, it's not just me, the early riser who needs a lot of sleep on the weekend to function.
All women need extra sleep. Professor Jim Horne, who is a sleep expert and is also the director of the Sleep Research Center at Loughborough University told Your Tango that women need an average of 20 minutes of extra sleep every night. Why? We have busy lives that simply drain us.
Duke researchers examined 210 middle-aged men and women, and they discovered that for women, poor sleep leads to high levels of psychological distress and depression. So why are we so grumpy when we wake up? Because you didn't let us sleep in! The men that were examined didn't have the same feelings or the same degree of "sleep disruption" as the women.
Professor Jim Horne basically called us women the smartest and most talented creatures ever *flips hair, "The more of your brain you use during the day, the more of it that needs to recover and, consequently, the more sleep you need. Women tend to multi-task ... and so, they use more of their actual brain than men do. Because of that, their sleep need is greater."
Ladies, the next time the man in your life decides to tell you that you don't need that much sleep, just show them this!
