For many Americans, the horrific images of September 11, 2001, are still vivid.  Speaking for myself, and I'm sure for millions more, those visions will be etched in our minds forever.

This Sunday will mark the 21st anniversary since the events of 9/11.  That's a whole generation of young adults whose only connection to one of the worst days in our nation's history is by way of second-hand accounts.

The vast collections of real-time footage from that day in 2001 can give our young men and women an accurate and dramatic historical representation, but there is still a disconnect from the emotions experienced by those who stopped what they were doing on September 11 and were filled with disbelief, anger, sadness, fear, and horror.

In 2021, on the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks, Corrigan-Camden ISD took a long-time Texas passion and turned it into an opportunity to honor and remember, they also turned it into a teachable moment.

As shown in the video below, Bulldog football players, cheerleaders, and other game staff paraded onto the field with American flags in hand.  They did so to pay tribute to the fallen and to remember the significance of the day.  They also did so to give thanks to all first responders, not only from two decades ago but to those in East Texas and within the Polk County area.

Events such as these build community, and they help to bridge the disconnect alluded to earlier in this post.  It also develops integrity and character, plus it also teaches that sacrifice and serving the needs of others is one of the greatest expressions of love.

This Friday (9/9), the Corrigan-Camden Bulldogs will host Kirbyville, and like last year, there will be time allotted in the pregame for this remembrance of 9/11.  The high school seniors will once again have the honor to carry our Stars & Stripes onto the field for this solemn event.  In fact, the players from Kirbyville are also expected to join in this tribute.

I hope this continues to be a yearly tradition at Corrigan-Camden.  I hope that other school districts follow suit. Perhaps there are other school districts that do something similar, if so, please let me know.

Plus, I want to say a heartfelt thank you to Corrigan-Camden ISD and to all those in this wonderful community who have done so much to embrace and put on this awesome event.
