This Is The Weekend Texas Buys Certain Appliances Tax Free
If you were waiting on an appliance sale, this might be as close as you will get. When buying a big ticket item, that 6.25 percent Texas state tax can add up to hundreds of dollars. The catch is that the item you buy needs to be an Energy Star Product, and only certain ones count.
Qualifying products May 29th-31st include:
- air conditioners (with a sales price of $6,000 or less)
- refrigerators (with a sales price of $2,000 or less)
- ceiling fans
- incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs
- clothes washers
- dishwashers
- dehumidifiers
There is no limit on the amount or number of the qualifying products that you can buy. You can also buy them online or by telephone. If you were going to have to pay state sales tax on the item, now you don't.
So if you are in need of any of these items, this is the time. The Texas Comptroller is also asking that we continue to practice social distancing while we make these purchases. No mention of masks. Hopefully things continue to go well in that department.
This is a great way to support local Texas businesses, while saving some money on what could be the biggest purchase of your life, after your house and car.
There are lots of energy star rated products that don't apply to this tax free situation. If you were planning on getting a sweet wine fridge, don't bother, it's not tax free. Deep freezers, dryers and stoves are also among items that don't qualify.
