Seeing the American flag flown upside down and at half-mast can be startling. What might be a political statement is, traditionally, a distress signal.

According to a Newsweek article, this flying of the flag upside down has been used by various groups as a form of protest. It catches your attention when you see it, that is for sure.

As an example, workers in Yosemite National Park flipped the flag to protest the firing of 1,000 park employees in mid-February. If you just saw the upside-down flag, what would you think was going on, not knowing the circumstances?

If you see the flag upside down on a pole at half-mast in Texas, when it wasn't upside down before, this is likely a liberal or left-wing protest. Conservative or right-wing protestors did the same when President Trump was convicted of a felony over the summer.
