You've probably heard the big news about Austin Street re-opening in Nacogdoches. Shoot, you probably even saw the post from last week about it on our website and social media page. If you didn't, you can click the link below to review:

If you aren't familiar with this particular road, and this particular road construction, then get ready. I'll fill you in on the details.

This construction project started back in January 2019. The goal was to widen the stretch of Austin Street from Raguet Street to North Street. It would widen the road from two lanes to four lanes. Austin Street is a rather busy intersection in Nacogdoches, and we knew that before construction started. Once it was shut down, EVERYBODY learned how busy of an intersection it was. Was the expansion needed? In my opinion, yes. The two lanes weren't really large enough for the amount of traffic going from University Drive to North Street. So, while the expansion was needed, it was still quite the inconvenience for those of us driving in Nacogdoches.

Let me tell you, I don't know that I've ever been more excited about the re-opening of a roadway than I am about this one right here. I remember a few years back when they did almost this exact same construction on Starr Street - on the opposite side of the SFA campus - to widen it as well. That was an inconvenience, too, but I don't remember it being as big of a deal as this Austin Street project has been.

But, that's all supposed to change now. Now, there will be a nice, wide road for Nacogdoches drivers to use, without having to go far out of their way on an alternate route. So yes, it's a big deal. If you're sitting there saying, "It's just road construction, a minor inconvenience. It can't be THAT big of a deal..." then you haven't talked to many Nacogdoches residents...Just about anyone that's been there for longer than a month will tell you that we've been ready for it to open.

And now, it will be open. You could say that I'm pretty excited.
