I wasn't watching the San Francisco Giants game on Sunday afternoon as they faced the Colorado Rockies.  However, I was keeping up with the play by play narrative.  I've been a big fan of the Giants ever since Brandon Belt from Hudson, Texas started playing for them back in 2011.

So, when I saw that there was an injury delay following Belt getting hit by a pitch, I grew very concerned.  I learned later that Belt had taken the brunt of a 93 mph fast ball on his left thumb as he squared around to bunt.  He was taken out of the game and the Giant's organization that Belt would undergo X-rays on Monday.

Monday evening it was revealed that Belt has a fractured left thumb.  According to the Giant's organization, Belt will meet with specialists to develop a recovery plan, and at that time figure out a timetable for his return.

Belt missed more than a month earlier this season rehabbing a knee injury.  Since his return, he has been one of the hottest hitters in the Major Leagues.  He has a career high 29 homers and he has raised his batting average to over .270.

The San Francisco Giants have the best record in the Majors at 102-54.  But, with six games remaining in the regular season, the Giants have still not clinched the National League West because their hated rivals, the Los Angeles Dodgers, have a record of 100-56.

So, given the Giants are trying to clinch their division and with the playoffs looming ahead, this injury comes at a very inopportune time.  Some have speculated that Belt could be out for several weeks, let's hope that he heals quickly and is able to return in time to lead San Francisco to a World Series Championship.
