The Texas Department of Transportation is alerting area motorists that crews will begin a mill and inlay project today in Lufkin that will continue through Wednesday and will include lane closures on Loop 287.

Today (Monday), work is beginning near the intersection of US 59 South/Loop 287 and will move northbound in the inside lane to FM 324/Southwood Drive. Motorists should expect delays during peak travel hours through the work area.

On Tuesday, crews will continue working but will move to the outside lane through much of the same area. The exit ramp and access road to FM 819/Feagin Drive will be closed throughout the work day. Also, motorists on the northbound access road to Loop 287 near US 59 will be merged onto Loop 287 under traffic control measures.

Mill and inlay includes grinding the upper layer of existing asphalt to remove any imperfections and placing a layer of hot-mix asphalt pavement on the milled surface, which levels the roadway, helps shed water and extends the life of the road.

Motorists are urged to reduce speed near the work area, stay alert and obey all traffic control. Delays should be expected as this work continues. Message boards will be in place to alert motorists of the upcoming work zone through the area.
