Lufkin PD: Woman Started Fire, Watched It Burn

Arson is one of the leading causes of fires in the United States, and the second leading cause of death according to FEMA. We don't usually get a lot of arson arrests in Angelina County, but there is always that occasional outlier.

According to KTRE a Lufkin woman was arrested for allegedly starting a fire outside a man's apartment in the middle of the night. Lufkin Police say that she stood there watching it burn until they arrived.

Around 2:56 AM on February 11, a Lufkin officer responded to the Sagewood Apartment Complex (formerly Fox Run) located at 300 South John Reddit Drive in Lufkin. When he arrived he found the suspect standing in front of the fire, staring at it.

Lufkin Woman Allegedly Sets Fire To Combat Sex Trafficking

According to the arrest affidavit, she told the officer her name and admitted to starting the fire. When she was asked why, she simply said "sex trafficking", and then refused to answer any further questions.

A concerned neighbor later told police that she saw the woman putting clothes in front of the apartment door around 2:30 AM. That same citizen took a video while she poured accelerant on the pile and lit it up.

LPD has tried to contact the apartment resident, but he didn't answer. It is unclear if he was home at the time of the incident.

23-year-old Lufkin Woman Arrested For Arson

Evelyn Gabrielle Hernandez, 23, was arrested and booked into the Angelina County Jail for arson, a second-degree felony. Her bond has been set for $20,000.

Investigators did not say if there was any connection between Hernandez and the man whose door she targeted. It's also unclear about what she meant by "sex trafficking".
