Update: The juvenile shot Tuesday evening in Lufkin died early Thursday morning in a Houston hospital. Charges will likely be upgraded to murder.

Sad news for two Lufkin families in the Pinewood Park Apartments near Dunbar Primary School on Martin Luther King Drive. According to the Lufkin Daily News, the Lufkin Police Department's public relations specialist, Jackie Zimmerman, sent a press release with the heartbreaking details.

A Lufkin juvenile was taken to Woodland Heights Medical Center before being flown to an out-of-town hospital on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, after being shot in the leg around 7 PM in the 100 block of Percy Simond Street.

Lufkin Police arrested Julious Jamal Griffin, 26, of Lufkin and charged him with a second-degree felony for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. According to KTRE, when Julious was 18, he was sent to prison for 8 years on four charges, including the sexual assault of an underage girl in May of 2016, who later tested positive for an STD.

Self-Defense Or Not, Griffin Has Committed Crimes

The Lufkin Police also charged Griffin with deadly conduct and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, both third-degree felony crimes. When he was arrested, he admitted shooting the juvenile, saying it was in self-defense.

Griffin was likely questioned at length before going to the Angelina County Jail. He was not in jail that Tuesday evening, 4 hours later.

He is now in the Angelina County Jail, and no bond amounts have been set. The current condition of the victim and their identity may never be released due to their minor status.
