The first day of August proved to be an odd one for the Lufkin Police Department.  I can only imagine the stories that some of the veteran officers have to tell given that most criminals couldn't pour water out of a boot with instructions on the heel. That being said, let's take a look at three of the stories from the Lufkin Police report from August 1.

Beer Karma

Jason Whitley, 35, of Huntington (pictured above) was arrested after he allegedly stole a woman's purse from her vehicle and then attempted to use her debit card to buy beer later in the day. An officer reviewed surveillance footage that reportedly showed Whitley entering the vehicle and taking the purse around 9:15 a.m. that day.

Around 1 p.m., the victim received notification from her bank that the suspect had just attempted to use her debit card at a Family Dollar on North Timberland Drive. She immediately notified the officer who took the report and within three minutes, the officer was at the store. The officer recognized Whitley from the surveillance video and was taken into custody. The card Whitley attempted to use matched the stolen card number.

Wienerschnitzel Wreck

Monday evening, around 8:30, a woman was at the restaurant going through the drive-thru. Employees at Wienerschnitzel reported that the woman hit and damaged a serving platform and then drove away without providing information.

When apprehended, the woman could face a healthy fine and be charged with a misde-weiner.

Smelly Crooks

Monday evening around 7:30, two people walked out of the Ulta Beauty Store on the South Loop in Lufkin with stolen merchandise.

What did they steal?  Perfume...$2500 worth of perfume.

Given that perfume is quite often priced at $100 or more for one bottle, this may not be as much perfume as you think.  But still, why steal that much perfume?  Are the suspects friends with a bunch of stinky people? Or have the thugs finally run out of catalytic converters to steal, and now perfume is the next easy heist?

Regardless, Lufkin Police are trying to procure leads and hopefully, they'll sniff them out.
