This week, motorists in Nacogdoches will see a traffic pattern change as crews begin to place bridge elements in a major construction project at Business 59 and Loop 224.

Concrete barriers are being set in the median near the intersection that will require the closure of one lane in both northbound and southbound directions. The barrier will confine traffic to a single lane in each direction as work begins to place the drilled shafts, bridge columns and crash wall to protect the bridge columns. The bridge work in the median will eventually connect the east and west sides of the newly constructed main lanes of US 59. Motorists can expect this traffic configuration to be in place for about three months.

“This project is progressing nicely and as we move into this phase, the traffic pattern changes are necessary to move ahead and prepare for the bridge placement,” said Rhonda Oaks, public information officer. “TxDOT will monitor the intersection and make any needed signal adjustments as necessary, but motorists should expect delays in all directions of Business 59 at this intersection.”

As the project moves forward, motorists can expect a different traffic control plan during final bridge placement, which is expected in about four months, weather permitting, with the possibility of work being performed at night.

The $86.1 million construction project includes construction of new US 59 main lanes that will directly connect to Loop 224 just south of Highway 7 and is being built to interstate standards. The project also includes the construction of overpasses at Spradley Street, existing US 59 and Old Lufkin Road, and the construction of frontage roads for Loop 224 between Highway 7 and Business 59.

The project is on schedule to be completed in spring 2023.
