The 4-year-old boy's family says the think he went looking for his missing dog, and that's how he ended up in the 23-foot hole. The boy was in there for a few hours for being rescued, but the dog could have been there for days. The family didn't even realize the hole was there before this incident.

The hole, initially identified as a well, was too narrow for immediate access, so trench rescue groups were called in from McComb, Hattiesburg and the Mississippi State Fire Academy. Authorities also received assistance from the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, Brookhaven Fire Department, and every volunteer department in Lincoln County.

Lincoln County Sheriff Steve Rushing said the boy was not actually stuck, but he did not know how to attach the rope emergency personnel were attempting to use for a rescue. (USA Today)

The boy is fine. No word on how the dog fared.
