March is National Women's History Month.  It's a time to celebrate and honor those women who have made such huge impacts in our communities, lifestyles, government, technology, and much more.  It's meant to be a nation-wide recognition, but we'd like to bring it to a more local level.

There are so many ladies across Deep East Texas who have been trailblazers in so many ways in our area.  Just take a look at the websites for the Angelina County/Lufkin and Nacogdoches Chambers of Commerce, and you'll see many lists and references to some of those movers and shakers.

For instance, the Lufkin Chamber has a yearly 'Athena Award' which honors a woman who embraces professional excellence, community service and for actively assisting women in their attainment of professional excellence and leadership skills. Here are the winners of that award since its inception:

2011 - Ellen Temple
2012 - Bonnie Denmon
2013 - Martha Hernandez
2014 - Donna Busler
2015 - Jane Ainsworth
2016 - Patricia McKenzie
2017 - Demetress Harrell
2018 - Sally Muhlbach
2019 - Cindy Tierney
2020 - Brenda Elliott

Go to the Nacogdoches Chamber website and just take a look at the many woman who have been presented as the Citizen or Co-Citizen of the Year Award.  This list includes (just to name a few):

  • Betty Shinn
  • Judy McDonald
  • Nancy Speck Mangham
  • Judy Abbott
  • Grace Handler
  • Dr. Janice Pattillo
  • Sue Kennedy
  • Marge Tipton

These previous names are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the multitude of women who have done so much for our communities.  That's where we hope you can help us out.  Throughout this month, we've teamed up with our friends from Premier Kia in Lufkin to honor as many exceptional women as we can.  Just fill out the nomination form below.
