City of Lufkin Prepares for Severe Weather Threat

Forecasts for Deep East Texas continue to show that severe weather seems to be a certainty sometime over the next 12-18 hours. Now is the time to prepare for these dangerous storms.

The City of Lufkin is offering ways to help in that area. Sandbags are now available at Grace Dunne Richardson Park until 4 p.m. on Monday. There is a limit of 10 bags per vehicle and it is self-serve. The Park is located at 200 Mott Road, near the Texas DPS offices. If you live in a flood-prone area, you may want to consider stocking up on this opportunity presented by the City of Lufkin.

Officials are also asking residents to remove trash cans from the curb by 5 p.m. today (Monday) to ensure they do not block storm drains and contribute to flooding. That was a major issue to led to flooding within the city of Lufkin during the storms on March 14.

The city’s police, fire, and public works departments have been put on standby with additional manpower and are ready to respond overnight if needed.

Rainfall is expected to become more widespread throughout Monday afternoon.  However, the worst storms are expected to hit the Deep East Texas area between 1 a.m. to 7 a.m.  Four to six inches of rain could occur overnight, golf-ball sized hail is possible as well as tornadoes with winds exceeding 111 mph.

“We will be monitoring this weather event throughout the day and into the overnight hours,” Communications Director Jessica Pebsworth said. “Stay aware of rapidly changing weather conditions and ensure that your family has a severe weather safety plan.”
