School has been in session for a week in Lufkin, and there have already been two crashes involving school buses. According to KTRE these were two unrelated incidents, and the bus drivers were not at fault.

The two collisions were minor, and no children riding were physically hurt. I have been in a few fender benders, and even if you aren't hurt, it will be something you remember.

These aren't the types of memories we want our children in Lufkin to have. If you can't see a huge bus, I'm scared to share a roadway with you.

Put Down Your Cellphone And Just Drive

TxDOT knows that school zones in Texas can be hectic. Every year before school starts they try to get the word out with their Be Safe. Drive Smart. Back To School campaign.

748 crashes occurred in Texas school zones last year, resulting in one death. There were also 2,523 collisions involving school buses resulting in 11 people killed and 63 seriously injured in our state.

Tips For Driving In School Zones

  • Be aware that traffic patterns around school zones may have changed since the last school year.
  • Stay alert and put your phone away. Using a handheld electronic device while driving in an active school zone is against the law.
  • Stop and yield to people in crosswalks.
  • Always obey school zone speed limit signs. Remember traffic fines increase in school zones.
  • Drop off and pick up your children in your school’s designated areas, not the middle of the street.
  • Keep an eye on children gathered at bus stops.
  • Watch for children who might dart across the street or between vehicles.
