If you have ever met Gordon Henley, you have a friend for life. He has been the director of the Ellen Trout Zoo since the first time I visited the zoo as a young child.

As an adult, I got to know him while working at the Zoo Boo and attending zoo functions. We also once got called for jury duty on the same day.

The world has changed so much since he started in 1976. The one constant for all of us was Gordon and the Ellen Trout Zoo.

Gordon Henley Made The Ellen Trout Zoo What It Is Today

The existence of an outstanding zoo in such a small rural area like Lufkin, Texas is unheard of. Now it's too big to fail, but it didn't have to turn out that way.

You can look to Gordon Henley and his wife, Charlotte, as the reason why. It is now an East Texas landmark that expanded many people's minds to the world outside our own.

After 48 years of leadership, Gordon has announced his retirement from the zoo he loves. He will officially retire at the end of 2024.

“Serving as the director of Ellen Trout Zoo has been a true honor,” Gordon shared. “I have cherished every moment spent creating a magical experience for our visitors, and I am profoundly grateful for the support of our community.”
