Recently Dan Aykroyd mentioned in an interview that a script was being worked on for a potential 'Ghostbusters 3.' While fans of the franchise began geeking out, I remained a bit skeptical of the idea.

Before you get upset with me, (or claim I don't know what I'm talking about)  you should know that I am a die hard Ghosthead. I love both original films, the animated 'Real Ghostbusters' series, the 'Extreme Ghostbusters' series, the 2009 video game, the IDW comic series, The 2016 'Ghostbusters' reboot, the board games funded by Kickstarter, the roleplaying tabletop game from 1989, the fan-made movies and web series', Sanctum of Slime, the apps that have appeared and disappeared from both iTunes and Google Play, and I'm even a part of the East Texas Ghostbusters chapter that is recognized by Sony pictures.

Basically, if you slap a GB logo on something, I'm going to want everything to do with it. So why would I, of all people, be skeptical about a third Ghostbusters movie that would carry on the story of the remaining OG Ghostbusters?

Here are five reasons I think it might actually be a bad idea;

  • 1

    The Extended Universe

In the world of Ghostbusters, there is a fantastic extended universe that carries over pretty much every single idea that's been put into the lore.

The video game follows the story of the original gang five years after the New Years incident with Vigo the Carpathian.

You play as 'The Rookie' Bryan Welsh, based on the game's creator, Ryan French. You are the 'test dummy' for all of Egon's experimental tech as you discover a plot that interweaves into unexplored aspects of the original 1984 movie.

The game is voiced by all the original Ghostbusters, and Dan Aykroyd and the late Harold Ramis helped write the story, so it's pretty legit as far as canon is concerned.

You can watch the whole story unfold by watching the cut scenes spliced with key moments of gameplay. Someone did a great edit and slapped it on YouTube.

The thing that worries me is that movie producers will deem the video game too outside the norm for the average movie-goer, and will shoehorn their ideas into saying the game's story is not true to the cinematic universe. If they lose the events of the game, a lot of huge fans will be extremely disappointed.

2019 Update: The name "Afterlife" gives the title a chance to be the 4th story told and allows for the events of the video game to act as the 3rd movie essentially.

    Ghostbusters: Answer The Call

Unlike many, I actually enjoyed the Ghostbusters all-female reboot directed by Paul Feig.

A lot of people might decide to dismiss my opinion all together at this point, but put aside how you feel about the movie itself for a minute, and look at what kind of message it would send to little girls and everyone that worked hard on that movie.

Luckily, the IDW comic series has bridged the universes and brought both GB crews together in one reality. It's an incredible crossover, and without spoiling anything, it basically makes it to where both teams share each others' experiences so in the big picture, the 2016 team has now done their part to take down Zuul & Vigo. Likewise, the '84 gang has experienced fighting it out with Rowan.

The same reasons as point #1 cause me to worry. Are these concepts too outside the box for the average movie audience? I seriously hope GB3 is well funded to the point that Dan and his team don't have to adhere to any ideas from bigwigs that aren't true fans of the universe.

    Timing

This isn't the first time Dan Aykroyd has gone around telling people a script was in the works.

In the years prior to Harold Ramis' death, they sent the script around and Bill Murray didn't think the plot was good enough to return for filming. Murray held out for years, and many of Aykroyd's ideas went into the 2009 video game.

If they're just working on the script now, how old will the gang be when they finally get to start filming? Will Bill Murray return, or will we only see Ernie Hudson and Dan Aykroyd in Ghostbusters 3?

    A Future Untold

A weird concept for me to think about is that in the Ghostbusters universe, maybe Egon is still alive.

Yes, we lost the great Harold Ramis in 2014, but that doesn't mean that  new stories could be published taking place in 2018 and on featuring Egon as a still living and integral part of the team.

If a third movie is made, that would say that definitively, Egon has passed away too. I like to live in my fantasy world where that's not the case.

    Ghostheads Will Lose A lot

Fans of the Ghostbusters franchise have been deemed "Ghostheads" by both the media, and by themselves. There is a Netflix documentary about our kind and the crazy lengths we'll go to to show our love for Ghostbusting.

I've spent thousands of dollars on Ghostbusters merchandise, and if a third movie comes out, my wife will most likely have to leave me for her own sanity and financial security.

There's no limit to how much I'll give to the GB franchise, and it may very well be the end of me. Joking/Not Joking.
