Lufkin Police are investigating the shooting death of a Lufkin man which occurred early Sunday morning.

The investigation remains fluid, but it appears the man was the backseat passenger in a Chevy pickup fleeing a disturbance when the incident occurred around 3:15 a.m. (corrected from earlier story) The suspect shot from their vehicle at the moving pickup, fatally wounding the man near the intersection of Lowery Street and North Timberland Drive.

The driver and front seat passenger said they believe the suspect chased them down Timberland Drive for several blocks. They could not give a clear description of the suspect vehicle due to ducking to take cover. They said they believe the vehicle stopped chasing them near the intersection of Timberland Drive and Paul Avenue.

They continued down Timberland Drive and met up with officers on Tulane Drive. By that time the man had lost consciousness and was not breathing. Officers performed CPR until a med unit arrived and paramedics took the man to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
