Rudy Flores was recently hired as the new director for the City of Lufkin Parks & Recreation Department.  Prior to that, Flores owned and operated the Changing Lives Dance Center and led many of its physical fitness programs. As part as an initiative to improve the quality of life of the city through fitness, he will bring several of those programs to the city’s current Parks & Recreation sports offerings.

“We are very pleased to have Rudy bring his success and emphasis on fitness to the City of Lufkin’s Parks & Recreation Department,” Assistant City Manager Jason Arnold said. “We believe the quality of life for our residents is greatly enhanced through Parks & Recreation programs. We want to see an already fine department expand its impact by adding fitness programs and city-wide initiatives in the future.”

“I’m excited about continuing the Parks & Recreation vision and developing our programs further with a complete focus on health and wellness in the city,” Flores said. “I want citizens to know that our goal is to be a community center with offerings for people of all ages and fitness levels.”

In addition to offering expanded programs, the city intends to bring publicly and privately sponsored sports and fitness events to Lufkin in the future. These offerings will be housed out of the city’s new Parks & Recreation facility which was purchased last fall.

“We have big dreams,” Arnold said. “In addition to more adult and youth sports offerings, we’d like Lufkin to become a destination for road races and biking events. We are particularly interested in seeing the return of the Annual Pineywoods Purgatory Tour.”

As part of the new fitness initiative and emphasis in revitalizing the city’s central district, the city is considering the improvement and expansion of its existing trail system – even linking downtown with other trails.
