For a first year event, The Junior League Of Lufkin Sprint into Spring 5k and 1 Mile Kids Fun Run was amazing! 173 people registered for the 5K and 29 children registered for the 1 Mile Kids Run!  159 runners crossed the finish line for the 5K and 25 children complete the 1 Mile Kids Run.

Many thanks to the 29 Fun Run sponsors that helped make this event a success and especially to the following for their contributions:

• Nacogdoches Endurance Training (NET) recorded the chip timing for the run and announced as runners crossed the finish line. NET also provided the event with some fun music for entertainment.
• Smoothie King provided sample smoothies and bars post-race, as well as coupons for smoothies in the runner’s entry bag.
• Cindy Hammond with Body N Sync provided massages before and after the race. Body N Sync also donated a door prize for a Reflexology Massage and $10 off coupons in the runner’s entry bag.
• Cellular One provided water, bananas, and a door prize for a smart phone.
• GNC donated a door prize for $50.00 in store credit at the Lufkin Mall and a shaker bottle with samples in the runner’s entry bag.
• Lisa Crow Photography took race photos at the event.
• Additional door prizes were gift cards from Orange Leaf and Academy Sports and Outdoor Store.
• Crown Colony Country Club donated brunch for two on Sunday.
• The Junior League of Lufkin donated 800 bottles of water and 24 dozen bagels for the event.

In addition, the Lufkin Middle School Cheerleaders volunteered their time to work at the water stations and along the course, and 25 members of the Lufkin High School Swim Team that ran the 5K for charity. The Middle School Volunteer Program, chaired by JLL Member Anita Boyd, volunteered their time to stuff items in the runner’s entry bag for Packet Pickup!

Scotty Sprinkle and Sara Neal were the first male and female to finish the 5K run. They were awarded with IPod Nanos donated by Best Buy. Medals were awarded to the top 3 finishers in each age division. The first boy and first girl to cross the finish line for the 1 Mile Run received a $50.00 gift card donated by Best Buy. Finisher certificates were handed out to each child as they crossed the finish line for the 1 Mile Run. The top three boys and top three girls were awarded with medals.

Although I prefer the bigger breeds, such as Labrador Retrievers, Alaskan Malamutes and Bernese Mountain Dogs, it was the Pekingese who took top honors at the 2012 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.

Culinary specialist Jamie Dunn and special guest Tracy Byrd cooked up an amazing show Thursday night at the The Taste of Home Cooking School held for the second time at the Pitser Garrison Civic Center in Lufkin.

Justin Bieber and Eminem may be two very different acts, but they wound up with the same number of awards at Sunday’s Billboard Music Awards.

Each star collected six trophies. Eminem scored victories top artist, top male artist, top Billboard 200 album, top rap artist, top rap song and top rap album. The Beebs won for top new artist, top social artist, top streaming artist, top digital media artist, top pop album and top streaming song.

Bieber provided a water cooler moment when he kissed purported girlfriend Selena Gomez after he won the top new artist award, lending some serious credibility to all the talk they are dating.

Taylor Swift won top album artist of the year, while Rihanna, who led the field with 18 nominations, took top female artist of the year honors.

The ceremony, which returned after a five-year break, came back with a bang. Britney Spears opened the show by performing a racy duet with Rihanna on her song ‘S&M’ that featured the pair locking lips. Spears wasn’t done, though – she returned later in the broadcast to perform her hit ‘Till the World Ends’ with Nicki Minaj.

Beyonce also had a memorable evening, earning the Millennium Award. A taped tribute featured glowing remarks from such luminaries as Michelle Obama, Lady Gaga, Bono and her own parents. She then treated the crowd to a live performance of her new song, “Run the World (Girls),” before accepting the award.

Though negotiations reportedly went down to the wire, Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul stepped out in full force Sunday for the first round of ‘X Factor’ auditions in Los Angeles.

“This show would never have been the same without Paula and I can’t believe I am saying this – I have missed her a lot, and I am thrilled she’s on the show,” Cowell said in a statement, confirming a deal with his former ‘American Idol’ cohort had been reached.

“I’m also delighted and grateful to be sitting next to Simon again … but you might want to check back with me in a week or two,” Abdul quipped, referring to the humorous but sometimes contentious relationship they had on ‘Idol.’

Adrianne Palicki, an actress most famous for her role as Tyra on “Friday Night Lights,” will portray comic book heroine Wonder Woman in a pilot being shot for NBC.

In the reboot, Wonder Woman will be a high-powered business executive, as well as a crime fighter.

Palicki, who says she is a comic book fan, stands 5’11, so she at least has the physical stature to fill the iconic role. Check out some images of the statuesque actress.

I loved her in the show Friday Night Lights, so I think she’s going to be a great Wonder Woman!
