According to Scientists at the Smithsonian Institute, they have produced scientific data that proves that mass sterilization or euthanasia is likely the only way to keep the nation’s cat population from destroying our country’s wildlife.

According to this new information, every single year in this U.S, cats stalk and kill 2.4 billion birds and 12.3 billion mammals, give or take a few billion. That’s two to four times higher than previously believed.

The U.S. has around 80 million stay cats, the study concluded that these are the main culprits. But the nation’s 86.4 million domestic cats do account for about 29 percent of bird killings and 11 percent mammal deaths. The report brands cats as an “invasive” species, imported to North America by humans and unchecked by natural predators.

The irony of it is that three of the 11 most-victimized (by cats) bird species in the study are also invasive: the house sparrow, the rock pigeon and the European starling, so who’s to say that in someways that aren’t doing us a favor?

If you sit back and really take in the information you’ve just read and then just think around the subject, you might find it has some merit?  I can’t be the only person who has noticed wild life diminishing, at least in this part of the country.

I remember being a kid and seeing a large variety of animals in these areas and not just the occasional dead armadillo on the side of the road, but animals moving, breathing, living among us. Lately I find myself wondering where have they all gone? To be honest I don’t even see those dead armadillos much anymore. Are we missing something major here?

We’ve all heard the stories about stressed-out parents drugging their unruly toddlers with a dose of Benadryl so that they can get some shut-eye, but this is certainly a new twist. On December 28, a 16 year-old girl and her 15-year-old friend from Northern California decided to buy her parents two milkshakes from a local fast-food joint and crush prescription sleeping pills in them so that they can explore the wonderful world of the Internet without that pesky 10 p.m. curfew.

The parents unknowingly drank half of their milkshakes, noting that it tasted a bit funny but at the time, didn’t think anything of it. They woke up in the middle of the night feeling groggy and hungover; when the symptoms didn’t subside in the morning they knew something was up and bought a cheap drug test only to discover that daughter dearest knocked them out cold so she could surf the web with her buddy.

The parents contacted the police, and the two girls were arrested and put into Juvenile Hall for willfully putting a drug into someone’s food and on suspicion of conspiracy. Due to the girls being underage, their names cannot be released.

Talk about starting the New Year off on the wrong foot! This is one New Year’s celebration that will live in infamy in the memories of both the teen girls.

Apparently, around 30,000 years ago, in current day Siberia, a squirrel put a seed in his borrow right before the big freeze, fortunately for us this seed was stored in a natural depository that we call permafrost.

The fossil seed’s DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid, or in other words “The Building Blocks of Life”) was extracted by Russian researchers and then through a series of scientific steps that most of us can’t even fathom, a flower from the Pleistocene era was resurrected.

The flower, whose scientific name is Silene stenophylla, is the oldest plant to ever be regenerated. The last time this flower was in natural bloom wooly mammoths and saber tooth tigers roamed the plains and three different types of human species: modern humans, Denisovans and Neanderthals, were alive and living among one another.

Today’s modern version of the ancient flower, although very similar does have a few differences such as: the petals of the modern plant are wider, perhaps because there is now less rainfall than in the past?

More than 800,000 seeds where found in the same location as this seed, in what seems to be a football field-sized treasure trove of ancient biological artifacts. This particular seed was chosen because of its ability to withstand harsh cold temperatures and the amount of viable tissue for regeneration.The flower has not only survived but is blossoming.

Meet Bella. Bella is a Bullmastiff puppy and she’s the newest member of our family. My friend Christine had a friend who just had puppies around Thanksgiving and since Keith has ALWAYS wanted a Bullmastiff, guess what I got him for Christmas? A sweet little Bullmastiff girl he promptly named Bella. She was just short of five weeks old when we got her and weighed in at a whopping 2.2 lbs! I’m happy to say that by her six week vet check this past Monday, she was up to 3.5 lbs! If she keeps growing at this rate, I’m screwed! I can’t wait until she’s grown! Can you imagine a 120+ pound running toward you across a field and calling her Bella? You’d think Xena or something all big and tough, but no, she’s our little baby Bella! Surprisingly enough, Mikey and Cam are doing pretty well with her and the cats tolerate her. What was I thinking? Getting a Bullmastiff when we’re currently homeless and living with my mom?!?!? Oh well! I can’t wait to share her puppy pictures as she grows up!

Here’s what we think she’ll look like when she’s mature! I doubt we’ll have to worry about being robbed!

I don’t know about you, but every morning I open my inbox to spam from each and every website I’ve ever visited (and some I haven’t) advertising their 12 Days of Christmas Deals, etc… Have Mercy! I don’t know if my husband realizes how lucky he is that that stuff doesn’t mean much to me. I don’t have to wear Jimmy Choos, I don’t need the latest trendy jewelry and more often than not, I’m pretty content with a wardrobe from Target or Kohl’s. If I ask for anything expensive, it’s usually for my horse, therefore it doesn’t count, since it’s not really for me:) So, since everyone else seems to be doing a top 12, I came up with a list of the top 12 reasons my husband should be thankful for ME this Christmas!

1. I’m allergic to gold… yellow, white, it doesn’t matter. He can get away with silver which is way more affordable. Now some might say he should move up to platinum, but I’m a country girl…  How would I know the difference?!?!

2. I’ve never asked for joint checking… granted, this is more for me than him, but seriously, if I ever really knew what he paid out daily for smokes and Red Bull or how much he really let Lani eat out, I doubt we’d still be together. Thank GOODNESS he’s never asked about what I spend!

3. I’m content to throw on a baseball hat with a little mascara and lip gloss and go where ever we need to go. I’m def not one of those girls who have to totter around on high heels 24/7 to feel like I’m dressed. Don’t get me wrong, I like to get ‘dressed.’ I get my hair and nails done regularly, but last Mardi Gras season, when we were royalty, I got wore slap out between hair, extensions, nails, tanning, shopping, etc… Upkeep like that is torture!

4. I do the laundry (he used to all of his and Lani’s before we got together) and we have ‘help’ every two weeks that I pay for out of my own pocket in addition to my daily straightening and putting up. He always has a nice house to come home to… and he complains that I wash his jeans too much. Oh well.

5. I don’t make him talk about his feelings.

6. I let him fart in bed and blame it out our 12lb doxie which is pretty nice of me considering that if it really was coming out of a 12lb doxie, said doxie would be at the emergency vet.

7. I am actually considering getting him a bull mastiff puppy. He’s always wanted one.

8. I put up with him AND his 17 year old daughter. If you’ve been around a teenage girl, you know what I’m talking about.

9. I will actually shove him out the door to play golf with his buddies. That way I don’t feel guilty about riding:)

10. I don’t bring up the fact he sold two Christmas presents of mine (from him) without asking, to buy me last year’s Christmas present.

11. I get my oil changed on my own.

12. He not only has a man cave, I don’t mind when he watches football.

Clearly, I’m an amazing wife and there are women who are shaking their heads right now. I know… He gets away with entirely too much, but he’s pretty good to me too!

1. He lets me sleep in (unless Lani isn’t up for school, then I have to get up to wake her up. Alarm clock anyone?)

2. He let’s me have not one, but two boyfriends. One is big, black and hung like a horse… Maybe because he is one!

3. He never says too much when I bring home another pet or want to foster one… As long as I pay for the vet bills, he doesn’t really care.

4. It was his idea to move out by my mom so we could be closer to her and the horses. What guy actually suggests moving closer to his mother-in-law?

5. He’s really good at building stuff. And he can run big construction equipment… which I can’t. Don’t judge.

6. He doesn’t miss the toilet in the middle of the night and he doesn’t mind when someone calls him Mr. Bristol.

7. He let’s me do my thing, whatever it may be… And he likes shopping way more than I do!

8. He’s crazy involved in his daughter’s softball career and coaches or helps out with any team she’s involved in.

9. He’s hard working. If he’s sees something that needs doing, he’ll generally just do it instead of waiting for someone else to take care of it.

10. He loves our dogs… I actually caught him crooning to Cam last night during the thunderstorm.

11. He never makes fun of whatever diet I’m on. Granted, he doesn’t participate or actively support, but he doesn’t make fun. As long as the man has Doritos, Albert’s, Chips Ahoy and sandwich makings, he’s happy.

12. He watches chick flicks and The Voice with me! AND doesn’t complain! That’s kind of huge.

Mmmmm…. Colin Farrell has been caught out horseback riding and for the life of me, I can’t figure out which one of the two is hotter! I’m a horse girl and that horse is FINE but I have always had a thing for Colin… Hmmm… You tell me, which one is hotter? Colin? Or his white horse? FYI, the pictures of Colin are from on the set of Winter’s Tale in New York City yesterday. The movie also stars Matt Bomer, Russell Crowe, Jessica Brown Findlay, Jennifer Connelly and Will Smith. It’s High School Football Playoff time again and the Lufkin Panthers have secured their spot in the the District 14-5 A competition. They’re in a 3-way tie for first place in their division with The Woodlands and A & M Consolidated.  They will play Spring Dekaney on Friday, November 16 at Sam Houston State.

The Panthers have enjoyed a winning season with the new Head Coach Todd Quick despite the loss of their head Coach John Outlaw last Christmas.  They finish regular seaon play with a record of 7-3.  The playoff game will be broadcast next Friday night on KICKS 105, so be sure to listen if you can’t be in the stands and root for the Panthers as they travel to Sam Houston State.

I got to talk to Gordon Henley Zoo director and all the staff about the care of the cub, and it was very interesting. To keep the cub from being viewed as an outsider in the cage later the zoo is placing the cub in a carrier in the exhibit daily.  One day the cub will be in the exhibit with it’s mother and father, and get it’s own pen after it gets larger than a carrier can accommodate.  While he was in the carrier in the exhibit the daddy lion was curious and was mere feet lying next to him.

He is up in the carrier in the cat building most of the day.  His mother cleaned him up really well when he was born but he did not nurse.  We don’t know why he didn’t, either the first time mother didn’t produce milk or he didn’t try to.  So it was clear they needed to intervene and they are now feeding the cub a varied mixture of 2 to 4oz Milk Replacement powder with water with chicken flavored baby food every 3 hours.

He seemed to be thriving and I even got to hear a couple of baby roars while I was taking the video.  These were the only sounds he made during the entire appearance, and we have them here exclusively!
